the Well-Kitchen has come into existence because of my drive to create community through the vehicle of shared mealtimes. Eating together builds bonds in imperceptible ways and I want to encourage people to do this often!
About ten years ago, the germ of an idea took root in my head, and in my heart. I looked around and found that in the increasing “busy-ness” of life, people were, while being in almost constant communication, losing connection with others. The past two years have then further isolated people with the need for lockdowns and we have become increasingly reliant on technology to connect us virtually. It has not always been this way. Wells were gathering places in ancient times – places of community where stories were shared, people were supported and relationships flourished. I believe that in our culture, the equivalent of these wells is the café; a place to gather over a cuppa and something nice to eat.
In the absence of a venue, I nevertheless set up the Well-Kitchen and have run some pop-up cafés, catered for parties and provided sourdough artisan pizzas from my kitchen at home. I am so excited to be able to actually provide a space for people to come and relax and connect with one another as we create a community café in the lovely space offered in the heart of the village by the Memorial Hall at Hazelwood.
